Roswell, Stonehenge, Loch Ness, and Virginia Beach. What do all these geographical locales have in common? These are venues for those who are curious about the universe's unexplained phenomenon, from the goings-on of UFO's, the elusiveness of monsters, to the root causes and out of the box treatments for illnesses. The latter holds true at The Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), a.k.a., The Edgar Cayce Visitors Center, located in Virginia's great coastal resort city. Cayce is known as the "Sleeping Prophet". He's called that because, for over 40 years, he would close his eyes, then go into an altered state of consciousness. Cayce would then utter "readings" on a variety of subjects, from the significance of the mythical Atlantis to the root causes and treatments for diabetes. He also prophesized about future events. I had pre-conceptions about my visit to the A.R.E. Would one of their psychics pull me aside and tell me what my future as a writer would be like? Would they advise me as to why I haven't found Miss Right yet? I was even expecting to be physically healed in totality, for I was scheduled to be on the receiving end of a renowned Cayce/Reilly full body massage. Cayce is deemed the "Father of Holistic Medicine", so his techniques being applied on my sciatica were something that I anticipated with great hope. The Strangeness of Deafening Tranquility When I first entered the building on 67th Street, I immediately noticed just how quiet and peaceful the greeting lobby's surroundings were despite the constant traffic of visitors. I mean tranquil: this place is in the Webster's Dictionary under the word "tranquil"! My tour guide took me upstairs to the metaphysical library, where some 80,000 books, ranging from dream interpretation to re-incarnation, are available to the public for study. The A.R.E. boasts the second largest library in the world for books on this subject matter (outdone only by The Vatican). Furthermore, all of Cayce's 14,000-plus readings are contained in volumes in a special section of the library. Coincidence Bizarre? As the tour guide led me around, I was informed that Edgar Cayce died at the age of 67 in 1945, basically wearing himself out to death from giving readings. And given that his center is on 67th Street in Virginia Beach, and that 1967 is my birth year….well, I expected to be beamed up to a parallel universe at any moment upon making these connections! Instead, I was politely told to keep quiet as the elevator beamed us up to the third floor, where a meditation room resides. We entered in to briefly observe around twenty people getting in touch with their inner beings. The room has an eastern window that opens out to an incredible view of the Atlantic Ocean. After my tour of the main building, I took a stroll in the Meditation Garden, where I noticed folks just chilling out in surroundings that include a Japanese bridge over a lily pond, a bamboo grove, and many other kinds of eye-catching plant life. Peanut Oil Unexpectedly After some quiet meditating of my own, I trekked up the hill to a large house that used to be Cayce's former hospital. Later, it would house the A.R.E. headquarters. Now the A.R.E. Health and Rejuvenation Center is located here. I was ready for my massage, but still a little nervous. My one-hour treatment included, among other things, some foot reflexology, and a CranialSacral. The massage therapist wasn't very happy with me. She was constantly on my case that I was tensing my body too much to get the full benefits of her work. She wished that I would've just fallen asleep, but the most peaceful that I ever became during the massage was a sensation of light-headedness as peanut oil was rubbed into my skin from head to toe. It absorbed easily into my skin and left no scent whatsoever. I walked to the bookstore (located in the main building), still half-dazed, and I came across book titles ranging from _Edgar Cayce on the Akashic Records_ to _Bodywork for Dogs_. _Realizing Your Psychic Potential_ and _Tuning Your Chakras_ are pre-sleep tapes I noticed while browsing. Do you want to know about your past lives or your spiritual path…you know, that deeper trekking we take every day on an individual basis? Well, the A.R.E. Bookstore has a special report just for you about such subjects! Some of Newman's Own Organics snack food products can be purchased here since they are made with quality ingredients. Visitors can buy peanut oil products in small or milk jug-sized bottles to treat aching joints. Yes, my experience at the A.R.E. was one I won't soon forget. I survived my journey into the strange, the bizarre, and the unexpected. Hopefully, I left the A.R.E. more prepared to deal with planet earth with my feet more firmly planted on the ground. By the way, no one gave me a prophetic reading: The A.R.E. only gives referrals for that.
