Compact               fluorescent               light               (CFL)               bulbs               have               provided               a               much               more               energy-efficient               source               of               lighting               than               incandescent               bulbs               and               have               allowed               for               significant               savings               on               electric               bills.

But               CFLs               may               be               just               a               transition               step               to               an               even               more               efficient               form               of               lighting               -               the               light               emitting               diode               (LED).

As               explained               by               Michael               V.

Copeland,               a               writer               for               Fortune,               LEDs               operate               based               on               a               different               technology               than               incandescent               bulbs               or               CFLs.

Incandescent               bulbs               emit               light               when               the               electrical               resistance               causes               the               filament               to               heat               up               and               glow.

Most               of               the               energy               is               released               as               heat               and               a               little               bit               as               light.

CFLs               emit               light               by               introducing               an               electric               arc               to               excite               mercury               atoms               inside               the               glass               tube.

LEDs               use               a               diode,               similar               to               computers,               and               when               electrons               pass               from               one               side               of               a               semiconductor               material               to               another               they               give               off               a               photon               of               light.

The               color               of               the               light               depends               on               the               semiconductor               material               used               to               make               the               diode.
               According               to               Copeland,               businesses               are               switching               to               LEDs               because               of               the               cost               savings               they               can               achieve               through               energy               efficiency               over               the               long               run.

Individual               consumers               may               be               reluctant               to               spend               the               initial               $30               to               $40               an               LED               bulb               can               cost.

But               according               to               a               cost               comparison               on               the               eartheasy               website,               the               total               cost               of               using               one               LED               bulb               with               an               equivalent               of               60               watts               for               50,000               hours               of               lighting               is               estimated               at               $95.95.

You               would               need               5               CFLs               to               get               the               same               lighting               at               a               total               cost               of               $159.75,               or               42               incandescent               bulbs               at               a               total               cost               of               $652.50.

Over               time               the               savings               with               LEDs               increase               proportionately.

technology               company               based               in               Durham,               North               Carolina               that               could               benefit               from               the               shift               toward               LED               lighting.

The               company               develops               and               manufactures               LED               lighting               products               and               components.

In               a               press               release               on               February               3,               2010,               the               company               announced               that               it               had               developed               a               white               power               LED               that               achieved               208               lumens               per               watt               efficacy,               breaking               what               had               been               an               elusive               barrier               of               200               lumens               per               watt.
               The               LEDs               produced               by               Cree,               Inc.

are               used               in               various               applications               such               as               video               screens,               gaming               displays,               function               indicator               lights,               automotive               backlighting.

The               company               is               also               gaining               contracts               to               provide               public               lighting               with               LEDs.

As               reported               by               Jeff               Drew               for               the               Triangle               Business               Journal,               Anchorage               and               Valdez               in               Alaska               have               joined               the               Cree               LED               City               initiative               and               are               in               the               process               of               converting               all               their               street               lights               to               LEDs.

These               cities               join               Raleigh               and               Chapel               Hill               in               North               Carolina;               Austin               and               Fairview               in               Texas;               Indian               Wells,               California;               Ann               Arbor,               Michigan;               Danville,               Virginia,               and               Boston,               Massachusetts.
               On               February               10,               2010,               Cree,               Inc.

announced               that               Arizona               State               University               had               joined               the               Cree               LED               University®               program               and               will               be               installing               Cree               LEDs               in               six               of               its               parking               structures               and               in               the               Sandra               Day               O'Connor               School               of               Law               rotunda.

Arizona               State               University               joins               various               other               universities               across               the               U.S.

that               are               participating               in               the               switch               to               LEDs.

Cree,               Inc.

also               announced               on               February               25,               2010               that               the               Hyatt               Regency               Grand               Cypress               Resort               in               Orlando,               Florida               has               installed               Cree               LEDs               in               its               54               hallways               and               in               its               newly               refurbished               10,000-square-foot               lobby.
               Cree,               Inc.'s               total               revenue               and               gross               profit               have               been               steadily               rising.

The               company               reported               total               revenue               of               over               $567               million               and               a               gross               profit               of               almost               $212               million               for               the               year               ended               June               28,               2009.

This               compares               to               total               revenue               of               a               little               over               $493               million               and               gross               profit               of               almost               $166               million               for               the               year               ended               June               29,               2008.

The               company               invested               about               $71               million               in               research               and               development               in               2009,               up               from               around               $59               million               in               2008.
